A Hard Poem

Mind

Must I go crazy just to write a song?
And how will that affect the poesy?
A torrent and an upsurge from my soul
Bring the words required for a poem
With the meanings knit into the phrases.
It's rage! It's rage! I'll make it beautiful.
Plates and mantles shifting in the earth
Release a gas that spews into the lines
And hardens into their longevity.
Half inspired, half conscious – I don't know
Consciousness – the tip of the unconscious.
A hard poem, beaten to submission
Thrusts its way into my consciousness.
Am I crazy? I take pills for that.

Images

Anger and love sound the same in all species.
Gentleness softens a soul.
I would adapt in the
Arms of a lover
I didn't desire.
A goon to approach!
I writhe and I die in
Remembrance and shame!
No longer a gush from
An artery opened,
My poems emerge from
The sight of my mind.
And up through the earth
Like a monster awakened
Emerges my visual soul!

A Hard Poem

My poems are too busy
Like a mind distressed.
Then suddenly they'll burst
Onto a sweet plateau
And lie upon the grass
Peaceful in the sun.
Metaphors and images!
Junkets was sensations
Hanging from a story,
A decorated plot.
The time for reading poetry
Is practically passe,
To maunder through a narrative
In quietude is gone,
Even though the images
Are crystals from a pool.

Fantasy

I cried.
40 years and on the verge of it.
I said I can't imagine in a queue
Waiting for a movie with my arm
Happily and casually
Round another's shoulder.
The therapist said, “Then you'll never do it.”
50 years and I've been writing poems,
And I can't imagine being great.

After Reading A Sucess Story

Driving Home From Winco

To be alone is tragic
Like the nothing of night skies
On the road with streetlamps
And no cars,
And the shadows of the trees
Around the houses.
I hate it! And I hate it! And I hate it!
The more he loves his lover then
The less he talks to me.
He doesn't like my poems,
So I shot him.
I was born a slave.
That's how I'll die.

12-16-13

Open

The wound is healed.
At last the verse is gone.
Beauty's dead
And lies beneath the lawn.

Tomorrow if
Another rupture opes,
And what's left
Of the cadaver gropes

From my body
Into open air,
Poesy will
Possibly repair.

TA In Review

The Witch Parent. What does it mean?
Intuition. The Little Professor.
I haven't got intuition,
Never had, doubt I shall ever.
Parent, Adult and Child.
I'm unaware of which ego I'm in,
If I'm in any,
If any exists.
Schizophrenics believe the world
Is scary. We're all schizophrenic.
Paranoia – the epithet
That means mediocrity -
Shattered my happiness
Gnawed at my soul.
Come upon one who is
Not mediocre,
The structure will float like a witch!
And the Gallows Laugh
Is found in a book.

After Reading A Success Story

Bukowski and zombies.
Live in a world
You used to imagined when
You were a boy,
Passing up Proust to
Embark as a writer,
Adored by the people,
As rich as the church.

I have over 70 paperback collections of poems on Amazon, and many on Kindle.  The paperbacks are usually $10 or less, the Kindles usually $1.  If you like my poems, you can find the books on Amazon by clicking "books" on the drop down, and in the search bar typing Joseph Hart Poetry.

The Trap Door

The Loser

I am 67
And I'm tired of going last.
I step aside when bullies take a walk.
I even yield to women.
They are strident, sharp and loud.
I seldom tell the truth cause people talk.

I'm the only loser
When a hippopotamus,
Covered with tattoos and nearly bald
Working in the mini-mart
For 7 bucks an hour
For reasons of his own says things that scald.

Oakland

Every kind and charitable,
Sensible and sane
Thing that you will find in her
Is countered by a vile
And reprehensible insanity.

Autocratic, fat and
Arbitrary, esoteric
Nightmare nestled in
The soul of Oakland.

Escape! You can't!
She'll chase you and she'll
Linger in your mind -
A single sentence from the seven
Volume tale of Proust.

Compared To Keats

Some beautiful passages,
Cumbersome tedium,
Keats always believed he was
Meant to be great.

With several pieces
That glisten like jewels
Nestled in cotton,
Inferior wool,

I can't believe in my
Fate or my destiny
Greatness or genius were
Promised to me.

The promise! How Christians
With no reassurance
Believe in the promise
That nobody gave.

Awakening

I never was a snob.
I wrote my poems
And I read them.
Never read the hacks.
I read the great ones
Like Millay,
Before her Keats and Brooke and Poe.
But now I slumber shallow,
Wake up in a panic
From inconsequential dreams.
I'm a hack. A dismal hack.
I only wanted rhythms
And quintessential phrases.
I sit in Denny's writing
And they ask me what I'm doing.
Shall I say, “I'm wasting paper”?
Well, my coffee's getting cold.
I'm as close to tears since I was
Listening to Hoffmann -
Antonia – the trio -
Hearing magic brought from hell.

12-15-13

The Trap Door

Surreptitiously feeling I was
Better than I supposed,
I looked at untalented poets
And considered me better than them -
Not really -
Considered me better than them.

Such is my ego, a web
That wraps around bushes and trees,
Leaves a little attached to leaves,
Then flutters away in the wind -
Purblind -
Flutters away in the wind.

Heavy the man on the floor
Who thinks he's secure where he stands,
Til errant destiny trips the lever
And plunges him into the sea
And darkness -
Below the trap door and house.

Tubi

This is a tubby named Tubi,
In charge of the keys and the gate.
She has her reasons, however
They're due to a personal hate.

This she won't tell you. Of course not.
She'll dress it all up with some lies.
Like Ko-Ko in Gilbert's “Mikado”,
She comes as a sudden surprise.

She threw me right out of her garden,
And rattled her key in the lock.
Linkedin's there for the lonely
To squabble and bicker and squawk.

The megalomaniacs mingle
Who know what their fellows should do,
Ladle the praises and censure
Just like an infant of two.

And Tubi herself! She's a poet
But one who can hardly construct
A simple declarative sentence.
Tuby, you bastard, get f-cked!

12-15-13

Happy

Nothing in my consciousness implies
Or indicates the tiniest degree
Of insight, understanding. But the phrases
And words I think up writing poetry!

Other people love and live, have duties,
Values and beliefs. But what of me?
I have nothing but a pen and paper
And some inspiration from the sea.

Right this very instant, I am happy.
Who knows why? Another mystery.
Writing now a second little poem,
Some psychotic genius broken free.

12-15-13

At Sea

I am manic. I am happy.
Too, too happy. Is this rage?
Sitting like a doll in Denny's,
Just a little bit offstage.

It seems to me that now I'm writing
Better than I ever wrote.
Or is this a silly fancy,
Something to amuse the goat?

On the edge of thought and feeling,
But it keeps my little boat
Not alone but on the ocean,
Almost midnight and afloat.

Why won't some permissive feelings
Let the human race go free,
As a consequence of writing
In a stolen liberty?

12-15-13

If you like my poems, my name is Joseph Hart.  I have books on Amazon and Kindle.  You can get to them by dropping down books, then typing Joseph Hart Poetry in the search bar.  Most of the paperbacks are $10 or less.  Most of the Kindles are $1.  I recommend "Ten Chaps" ($12.50 paperback, extra thick), "Words Without Music" (new), "Poems Published in Audience Magazine" and "Endymion Awake".  But there are over 70 to choose from (not all on Kindle), and most of them I regret to say are iconoclastic and irreverent.

The Linkedin Thread

The Linkedin Thread

Arguing at Linkedin
Like liberated nuts
About the real topic,
And wishing heads up butts,

Complaining that the Brit
Who just pulled up her skirts and fled
Was myopic and benighted
When she planned and named her thread.

To qualify a forum
About poetry I thought
Would post a couple poems.
This one certainly does not.

The topic of this forum
Was that poems should be fun.
That topic drawn and quartered
Now lies rotting in the sun.

The men and women battle
(All advanced in years I wis)
What the topic ought to be,
To hell with what it is.

A Linkedin Poetry Forum

Beware!

Beware!  I am insane.  I value nothing,
Except my cats and happiness and trust.
The ill- and under-educated try
To sound sophisticated citing Jung
Reviewing a contemporary song.
None of them can say, “It's beautiful.
I like it.”  Poetry and Joseph Campbell.
Is this the world?  Are nations all the same?
Abandoning the hatred in my verse,
Returning to the poesy I wrote
Before the vein broke, putting it away.
They will play their games.  And I'll play mine.
I'll just stay indoors.  It's cold outside.

Hopefully An End To Hate

I shall go to hell
(So the Christians say)
As ignorant and stupid
As the rainy day

When I was conceived.
But I iterate
There's a difference in poems
Twixt serious and hate.

How many years elapsed?
Seven?  Maybe five?
Hating what I wrote
As though it were alive.

Anger is a real
And necessary thing,
But it's not a crown
To put upon a king.

Passing through the rage
My poesy released,
I don't know why it started,
I don't know why it ceased.

12-14-13

Talent

I'd like to think my heart has talent,
Poesy my childish wont.
I'd like to think my rhythms charm,
But in fact I don't.

Others who declare their brilliance,
Post on forums, send to zines,
Claim a genius from their childhoods,
Don't know what a poem means.

Even those who try tradition
Have no rhythms, ruin rhymes,
Give up and marry, age and perish.
I shall perish too betimes.

12-14-13

Women

Men afraid of women
Who aren't afraid of men.
“Yes, my love, I'm coming.
I fell asleep again.”

Women iron-plated,
Keeper of the keys,
Hold the truth of heaven
Just above their knees.

Daddy's little darling.
Mommie showed her how.
Don't ask her when she wants it.
You know she wants it now.

A Linkedin Poetry Forum

The people on that thread I think
Are totally insane,
Except the few who left like fleeing rats
From a ship that's sinking.  It has yet
To founder.  And the subject of today
And yesterday and many days before
Is what the topic of the thread should be,
Indifferent to what the topic is.
Rather like the title of a book
That no one likes, so everybody changes
In the spirit of democracy.
Poetry – the issue of the forum.
Not a verse is posted or discussed.
These men and women gladly tell their ages -
67, 70, beyond.
It lessens hope for all longevity.

While Listening To Liszt

Just Going

Impulses, fantasies, feelings -
Inappropriate – still the doubt -
The doctor didn't quite sort them out -
Now I'm ripping the scab away -
Horrid thoughts of another day -
Heal it over and seal it down -
Take your lover away from town -
Ancient feelings and bygone thoughts -
However loved, every lover rots -
Christ!  What a horrible mess!
Whatever you do, don't say “yes” -
My verse is improving as I get old -
There is nourishment in the mold -
But going backward, not forth because
My verse is as good as it ever was -
As my lease on the earth expires
And my motivation tires,
Unlike Hemingway I run out
Of thoughts and topics to write about -

12-13-13

While Listening To Liszt

Through the horrors and the wars -
Glory, gold and god -
Purpose for the common man
Since the earth was just a clod -

Still someone invented
The piano and the violin -
Though neither god nor man
Has for a day relented -

12-13-13

Commonplaces

Stay away from crazy people.
What they say will f-ck your mind.
And the liar said to me,
“Thank god for honest men.
They increase your freedom as you
Always know what they're about.”
And the doctor shouted,
“I can't tell you what to do.
Only you can tell me what you want.”

12-13-12

The Brooder

In places still called grammar schools
They inculcate the country's rules,
And not a single son can stammer
Out a single word of grammar.
But they all wear t-shirts bearing
Football emblems and uncaring,
And the daughters dressed in pink
Love themselves and learn to think.
Starting on the bottom rung,
They teach the babies while they're young.

Revenge

Revenge

Lying crippled on the ground -
A sibilant and sliding sound -
The coiled, uncoiling snake came near -
Slowly moving to his fear -
“Shoot the thing,” he whispered.  And
His companion grasped a hand
Around the butt and aimed instead
At his helpless buddy's head.
“Then that!” he hissed. “And not the snake.”
He tasted tears of terror slake
His thirst.  His buddy's arm swung round.
He shot the snake.  A single sound.

12-13-13

Status

People are starving,
And many at war.
Children of Africa -
Horrors untold.
Republicans sit on their
Open agendas.
The crippled and indigent
Lie in the snow.
Obama is better than
Reagan and Bushie?
I don't believe it.
He's all that we've got.
India just
Resurrected a statute.
Sex between guys could get
Somebody shot.
Now it is Christmas.
All over the world
God's chosen people -
What are they worth?

The Cop

Into Denny's stately walking,
Violence incarnate,
All rigged out to beat and kill,
His counterpart is lethal.

Sending one to meet the other.
Have a couple eggs and toast,
Potatoes and a cup of coffee,
In your very special seat.

Heavy deity of steel
Walks with smug authority.
Too many people on the planet.
Excessive force is comme il faut.

This bulky robot is instructed
To enforce the current laws.
When they change the laws tomorrow,
That is what he will enforce.

Conquering the foe, remember,
A policeman is your friend.
