A Saying

I read this in the 70s
I think. I don't remember.
Nor have I any notion of the author.
It read, “In times as ugly
As these, the only protest
Is beauty.” This is so
In every century.
I wish this perfect saying
Were said throughout the world.
Perhaps it is. Who knows?
I don't get out much.

Amazon

If you would be happy
Never post reviews
On Amazon.
The people who respond
Are not witty,
Not informed,
And not intelligent.
That doesn't stop them,
And they love a fight.
Go ahead, poor fool.
Defend yourself.

Trees

Why should I write poesy
When no one wants to read it?
Where is an Arcadia
Where gentle creatures need it?

Perhaps because my poesy
Is bad? This isn't so.
It's as good as Edna, Keats,
The Oscar. This I know.

Perhaps because I write a style
Of poesy passe.
The British do it better, and
They're doing it today.

Common Sense

No mercy in the enemy -
The white flag will be shot.
Ungiving and voracious greed
Is an obscenity.
Why must there be morals?
Every creature has to die.
Those who give their hearts for love
Are going to be broken.
Sententious little ditty!
Everybody knows these things,
And knows more truths than ever I
Thought possible to know.

Peace

If neither of us had a c-ck
And hugged til it was dawn
Naked under blankets made of fleece,
Affection is our comfort until
All the stars are gone.
And touch becomes benevolent as peace.
