Mason/York

Judy Garland

Noel Coward. Oscar Wilde.
John O'Hara. Poetry
Cannot achieve the sweet perfection
Of a perfect piece of prose.
“If Love Were All” - a perfect song -
Not lugubrious, just true.
I had four loves. I lost them all.
And two of them I didn't want.
One of them I turned away
Or live with him in India.
And of the others – my sweet love -
I hounded him until he left.
And the 5th one, 20 years.
I simply wasn't born to love.
Just to think about it.
But the voice of Judy Garland -
Sweet and clear - “If Love Were All” -
Inaudible for steel guitars,
Screaming madmen, drums and rap.

Keats & Love

So long I worshiped Keats
When Dr. Simons didn't -
In Keats lies all my madness
And my sanity.
I do have a heart.
Alas, it's just for Keats.
I love – but I don't love -
A shadow and a wish,
The promise of behavior
When I'm writing poesy
Or when I'm reading Keats.

Mason/York

Hateful Leffingwell -
An angel unawares -
Knew what people needed
And what they ought to say.
I always liked James Mason
And always thought that he
Resembled Michael York.
Leffingwell said no.
That ended the discussion
And also my opinion.
Ugly little Leffingwell,
Son of Jacqui Schiff.

Jeered At

2 a.m. at Denny's.
A guy with punctured ears
Jeered when I walked in.
Nobody before
Has jeered at me in Denny's,
Though I have expected it
For years.
I came to Denny's
Almost constantly
Before I lost the car,
My liberty, my rights.

The Debate

Here alone at Denny's
A student out of school
Is saying a discussion
(Creationism, Darwin)
Was very interesting.
Expressing no opinion,
Their conversation changed.
Anyone can say
The theory of creation
In a single sentence
Of eleven words or less.
