Bill
You had a hell of a Parent.
Would Eric Berne approve?
After she put you through college
After she put you through college
And got you a PhD,
You went into private practice
And divorced her. Didn't she
Have anything else to offer
After the gold was gone?
Love was never an issue
Maybe. Yesterday
I saw you on the sidewalk,
Carefree, grey and free.
I rented a room from your mother
Many years ago,
And took your class in college.
God what an ugly man,
Far above the masses
In TA liberty.

Birgit Nilsson
Tell me why I listen to
Maria Callas sing
“Visi d'arte”. Birgit
Nilsson
Sings so beautiful.
Like melted choc'late slowly
dripping
Smoothly from a spoon,
The notes of music soothing
slip
Into my willing mind.

Freddy's Eye
I put my finger in his eye
And rake a tiny clot
Of matter from the corner. Freddy
Twists his little head,
Then cuddles close for something,
Probably a stroke.

Fate
I think with dread my newest songs
Are slick and without merit,
Except they skim the surface of my
soul,
And plumb with phrases thoughts I never
had.
Are the old ones better?
God and the unknown!
God and the unknown!
I'm alive at 66 to write such verse as
this,
To have it all forgotten when I'm dead.

Intolerance
People will get hurt
And angry. It's unplanned.
It's not that no one does,
But can not understand.
We room and board four cats.
Together several years,
The older ones just sleep,
The kitten stirs their
fears.
I am not so deep
Or perceptive. I
Am frightened like a cat,
Critical and shy.

Better Friends
I think you want me to love you,
Despite your better friends.
You said you felt like a prisoner here.
But your means don't meet your ends.
Your friends are people who love -
Liars and cons and thieves -
Held by the heel and dipped in ink.
Even god deceives.

Him
Gentle good and even kind,
A communist with dollars,
Inward knowing, outward blind -
“Come in!” - to any callers.
A perfect joy, a subtle wit,
Contented to be happy,
Going mad in spite of it,
With music worse than crappy.
Ordinary, no tattoos,
Civilized and caring,
Greedy friends he won't refuse -
Nailed with one word - “sharing”!
Intelligent and true and slow,
Doubt within him rages,
Knowing what few people know.
And the planet ages.

The Mean
When you're cruel and sinister,
Nothing's left but sex.
Poetry and gentle things
As though you are convex
Slip off you to the froth and foam
And very quickly sink.
Nothing's warm and nothing's kind,
Not even when you think.
Perhaps you may pretend to be
And even claim you are
Sensitive. Though probably
You are a burnt out star.
